Day one: book, and be honest
Call before you start packing, not after. Availability is the constraint you cannot solve later, and a fortnight is enough notice in most weeks of the year and tight in the busiest ones.
Be accurate about what you have even though you have not sorted it yet. An estimate built on an honest description of a full house is worth more than an optimistic one built on what you hope to have reduced it to.
Book the other things the same day: utilities at both ends, and any qualified disconnection for gas or plumbed appliances. Those have their own lead times and they do not compress.
Then: pack, do not sort
This is the important reversal. With time, you sort and then pack. Without time, you pack and sort later.
Trying to make decisions about every item while packing is what makes a compressed move fail. It is slow, it is exhausting, and it is where people stall.
So pack almost everything, and be deliberate about only two categories: things that are obviously going, and things that are obviously not. Anything in between goes in a box and gets decided at the other end, where you will have time.
The exception is genuinely large items. A sofa or a dining set you are unsure about is worth deciding now, because those are volume and volume is cost.
Order of packing
Start with the garage, the basement and storage areas. They hold the most volume and the least urgency, and they are what people leave until last and then run out of time for.
Then spare rooms, then the rooms you use, then the kitchen last.
Label by destination room. Number the boxes and keep a rough list, which matters more on a rushed move because nothing was sorted.
What to skip
Deep cleaning as you go. Do it at the end or pay someone.
Selling things. It takes weeks and you do not have them. Donate, give away or dispose.
Perfection in labelling. Room and a number is enough.
