The three-move rule

A useful test, and unusually decisive. If something has moved with you three times without being used, opened or missed, it is not a possession any more. It is a recurring expense.

That covers a lot: boxes sealed at a previous address and never opened, furniture kept because it might suit a future house, equipment for a hobby that has not been picked up in years, and duplicate kitchen and household items that survived because nobody looked in the box.

The test works because it removes the argument. You are not deciding whether something is valuable in the abstract. You are observing that across several years and several houses, you never wanted it.

Do it before, not after

Clearing before a move rather than after is the single largest saving available on most moves, and it is the step people skip.

Anything unwanted costs three times if you move it: packing it, transporting it, and disposing of it from a house you have only just arrived in, usually while surrounded by boxes.

Start weeks ahead and start with the garage, the basement and storage areas. They hold the most volume, produce the hardest decisions, and are what gets abandoned under deadline.

The thing that actually makes it happen is a booked date. An open-ended intention to sort the garage does not produce a sorted garage. A truck arriving on Tuesday does.

How it is quoted

By what there is and what is involved in getting it out. Stairs, a long carry to where a truck can park, and dense material affect the figure more than raw volume does.

Photographs are usually enough for a straightforward load and give a more accurate number than a description. Include the route out and where a truck can sit.

Separate anything you are keeping and put it somewhere else entirely. A pile that is entirely going is faster to load and impossible to get wrong.

Hazardous material, including paint, solvents, chemicals and fuel, needs a different route and is not something we can haul. Ask when you call rather than on the day.
