Avoid the canyon rush

The most locally useful thing on this page. On winter weekend mornings, particularly after a storm, traffic toward the canyons is heavy and the approach roads are busy well before most people are up.

A truck trying to reach an address near those routes at nine on a Saturday is in the worst of it.

Move midweek if you can. If it must be a weekend, start early enough to be ahead of it, or plan for the afternoon once the traffic has gone up.

Snow removal is somebody's job: find out whose

Ask before winter, not during. In a rental it may be the landlord's, an HOA's or yours, and on a sloped driveway that is a real obligation.

For moving day specifically, the driveway and the path have to be cleared and treated before a crew arrives, not while they wait. That directly reduces the hours you pay for and it is the single most useful thing you can do.

Steps and the landing above them matter most, since that is where a fall is worst.

Parking is the recurring problem

Street parking restrictions apply in winter in many places so that ploughs can work, and enforcement is real.

Find out before the day where a truck can legally stand and for how long. In a complex, ask whether loading areas need booking and whether there is a height restriction on any covered parking.

If access is genuinely tight, say so when booking. A smaller vehicle making two trips is sometimes the right answer and needs planning rather than discovering.

The gear consideration

Most households here have equipment worth more than the furniture. Skis, bikes and cameras go in your own vehicle rather than on the truck.

Cold and your belongings

Liquids freeze and split their containers. Electronics dislike the condensation when brought from cold into a warm room, so let them reach temperature before switching on. Batteries lose capacity and can be damaged.
