Take the expensive things yourself

The simple rule that solves most of this. Skis, snowboards, bikes, climbing gear and cameras go in your own vehicle rather than on a truck.

They are valuable, they are awkward to pack properly, and on any move the basic level of a mover's liability is settled by weight rather than value. A carbon frame weighs almost nothing, which tells you what that would be worth in a claim.

If something genuinely must travel on the truck, say so specifically so it is packed and loaded accordingly, and photograph it beforehand with any serial numbers.

Skis and boards

Use a padded bag if you have one; otherwise wrap the edges, which are sharp enough to damage everything around them and are themselves easily nicked.

Bases should not travel pressed against anything abrasive. Bindings are the part that gets knocked out of adjustment, so they want protecting rather than the topsheet.

Boots in their own bag, buckled closed so they hold their shape.

Bikes

Remove the front wheel and the pedals, drop the seatpost, and turn or remove the bars. That reduces a bike to something that stacks rather than something that snags.

Protect the derailleur above all. It is the most easily bent component and a bent hanger is the commonest transit damage.

Put spacers in the fork and rear dropouts if the wheels come out, and do not stack anything on a frame.

Climbing and camping equipment

Ropes and slings should not be stored under heavy weight for long or anywhere near solvents, fuel or oil, which degrade them. Keep them in their own bag rather than in a box of garage contents.

Anything with fuel does not travel: stoves need emptying and canisters cannot go on a truck at all.

Tents and sleeping bags must go in dry, and sleeping bags stored compressed lose loft, so if they are going into storage, store them loose.

Storage over the summer

Common here and worth doing properly. An unheated unit gets hot, which is hard on adhesives, plastics and anything with a battery.

Wax skis before storing, keep gear off the floor, and take batteries out of everything.
