Moving During Provo's Busiest Weeks

Provo has a few weeks each year when an extraordinary proportion of the population moves at once. Contracts end, contracts begin, and thousands of people try to do the same thing on the same days.

Everything is harder in those weeks, and almost all of it is predictable.

Book everything early

Movers, trucks, storage units and cleaning all run out. Not become expensive, run out.

Book several weeks ahead rather than days. If you know your contract dates in advance, and you generally do, there is no reason to leave it late.

The same applies to a rental truck. The branch nearest campus will be empty in peak week, and the alternative is driving to another town to collect one.

Avoid the middle of the day

Peak within peak is late morning to mid afternoon. Lifts, loading zones and car parks are all at their worst then.

Early morning is dramatically easier. So is the evening before the deadline, if your contract allows it.

Expect the parking to be the problem

In dense student housing, loading zones fill and stay full. A vehicle left blocking one during peak week will be noticed quickly.

Work out where you can legally stop and for how long before the day. If several of you are moving, one person staying with the vehicle solves most of it.

Be genuinely packed the night before

The commonest failure. Packing on the day pushes you into the worst hours and means carrying items down individually rather than in stacked loads.

Everything sealed, labelled and stacked by the door the previous evening. Then the day itself is only carrying.

Do the checkout properly despite the rush

Clean while the room is empty, which is far quicker, and before you run out of time.

Photograph the room empty, including floors, walls and any existing damage, before handing back the key. In a high-turnover market with fast inspections, that record is the only thing standing between you and a deduction for something that was there when you arrived.

Get written confirmation the key was returned.
