The person moving should not be going up and down repeatedly on the day answering questions. Make the decisions beforehand: walk the house with whoever is helping, mark what is going, and put something visible on each item so that nothing needs deciding while a crew is standing on a landing.
Then set up one comfortable room on the ground floor as their base for the day. It sounds small and it changes how the day feels entirely.
Measure before you sort
Single-level homes are generally smaller than the multi-level house being left, and the storage difference is larger than the living-space difference. A basement and an upstairs absorb decades of accumulation; a single-level home with a garage does not.
Measure the new rooms first, then sort, because it changes what is worth keeping and it is much easier to decide once than twice.
Sort into three: what comes, what goes to family, what is cleared. Two-way sorting stalls, because the difficult items are exactly the ones that are neither.
Pay attention to the pieces people assume will fit: a dining table with leaves, a sectional, a large dresser, anything that came into the old house before a doorway was reframed.
What single-level living actually needs
Worth thinking about while sorting rather than afterwards. Furniture at a comfortable height, clear routes with nothing to catch a foot, and good light are worth more than keeping a particular piece.
If a piece is beautiful and impractical, that is a decision to make deliberately rather than by default.
