Measure the route, not the room
Before buying anything large, measure the tightest point of the journey from the street to where it is going.
The list, in the order things fail: the turn at the top or bottom of a staircase, the ceiling height above that turn, the width of the staircase itself, interior doorways, and the front door.
The turn and the ceiling above it are what people never measure, and together they are the most common reason something does not go up. A long piece has to be tilted to get round a corner, and the tilt needs headroom.
For a sofa, measure the diagonal depth as well as the length. It is the diagonal that has to pass the turn.
Ask before you buy
Retailers can usually tell you whether a piece dismantles, whether the legs come off, and whether the back separates. Sectionals come apart, which is why they get into places that a single sofa cannot.
If the answer is that it does not come apart, and your measurements are marginal, believe the measurements.
It is also worth asking whether the delivery includes carrying it to the room. Curbside means your driveway; threshold means just inside the front door. Neither gets it upstairs, and that is where we usually come in.
