Give the decision time, and give them the decision

Where a parent can decide for themselves, they should, even slowly and even if you disagree with the pace.

Moving away from a house, a neighbourhood, a congregation and forty years of routine is a significant loss, and it is a loss even when the move is plainly sensible. Treating it as an obvious logistics problem is how these go badly.

Involve them in the choices they can still make: which things come, where the furniture goes, what the new place looks like.

Sort out the practical questions early

Where they will actually live. Their own place, a smaller home nearby, or with you. Each has a different answer about independence, and the one that feels generous in the planning is not always the one that works after six months.

If it is with you, talk properly about space, privacy and how the household runs before anybody commits.

Healthcare continuity. The single most important practical item. Find physicians here before the move, transfer records and prescriptions rather than leaving it, and check that any Medicare supplemental or advantage plan works in this area, since some are tied to a service region.

What they will do here. The thing families forget. A parent who leaves a community arrives with none, and the first months can be genuinely isolating. Somewhere to go and people to see matters as much as the house.

The move itself

Long-distance and priced on weight and volume, so downsizing before it is where the money is.

Decide against the new floor plan rather than by walking their house giving things up. Ask early and with a deadline about what family members want. Book a hauling visit for the remainder before the move, not after.

Keep documents, medication, jewellery and photographs with a family member rather than on the truck.

The first weeks here

Photograph their rooms before you dismantle them and reproduce the arrangements. Familiar layout is genuinely orienting.

Set the bedroom up completely on day one. Put the photographs out immediately rather than later.

Then plan visits for the second and third weeks, not just the first. The quiet after everybody leaves is when a move is actually felt.
