Measure the space honestly, early

A converted basement or a spare-bedroom suite is almost always smaller than the home somebody is leaving, and the constraint is rarely floor area. It is doorways, ceiling height and the stairs down.

Measure the route into the space before deciding what comes. Basement stairs are frequently steeper and narrower than the main staircase in the same house, and they often turn. A bed frame or a dresser that fits the room perfectly is no use if it will not get down to it.

Do that measuring before the sorting, not after. It changes which pieces are worth keeping, and it is much easier to make those decisions once rather than twice.

What actually comes

The furniture that matters most is the furniture somebody uses every day: their own bed, their own chair, the table they eat at. Those should come even when something newer is available in the house, because familiar things are what make a new space feel like theirs rather than like a guest room.

Beyond that, be realistic. A dining set for eight does not belong in a basement apartment, and neither does a household's worth of kitchen equipment when there is a kitchen upstairs.

Sort into three: what goes into the new space, what goes to family, what is cleared. Two-way sorting stalls, because the hard items are the ones that are neither.

The part families underestimate

Independence. A parent moving in with family is giving up a house they ran, and the small practical decisions about their own space are one of the few things left entirely within their control. Let them make those decisions, including the ones you would make differently.
