Tape is the one to spend on
The single most important point here.
Adhesives lose grip as temperature drops. Cheap tape that holds adequately in a warm house will let go in an unheated garage or a cold truck, and a blown-out box bottom is already the commonest packing failure in any weather.
Buy proper packing tape, use several strips across the seam rather than one, and tape the bottom of every box properly before you start filling it.
Two practical points people learn the hard way. Tape does not stick well to a cold or damp surface, so bring boxes indoors to warm before sealing them. And a tape gun in freezing conditions is considerably harder to use than in a warm room, so do the sealing inside.
Cardboard and damp
Cardboard loses strength when it takes up moisture, and winter provides moisture in ways summer does not: snow on a truck ramp, wet boots, slush at a threshold, and condensation on boxes brought from cold into a warm house.
Do not store boxes in a garage or shed for weeks before a winter move. Keep them inside, dry and flat until you need them.
Never set a box down on wet ground, even briefly. The bottom wicks moisture immediately and that is the box that fails on the stairs.
Where free boxes still work
Retail boxes remain the best free source: square, strong, and consistent, which matters because uniform boxes stack squarely and gaps are what cause a load to shift.
Avoid produce boxes, anything that held food, and boxes that have already moved house, since cardboard fatigues.
In winter, add one more rule: avoid any box that has been stored damp, whatever its origin.
What not to economise on
New boxes for anything fragile. Plain paper rather than newspaper, which marks china. And enough boxes that nothing is overfilled, because an overfull box in the cold is a box that splits.
